  • 1 February. Enlisted in the Navy and after basic training at a US Naval base was posted to Net Cargo ship Zebra AKN-5

    USS Zebra (AKN-5) departing a floating drydock at Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides Islands after total rehabilitation to operable status, 29 February 1944, two days after being commissioned AKN-5.

Note: Naval rosters give us a good idea of the ships that Howard served aboard during WW2. Note his first sailing is May 1945 and this is after the Zebra AKN-5 only battle action which was the Iwo Jima operation. An assault and occupation of Iwo Jima, 28 February to 16 March 1945

  • 6 June. Howard is onboard Attack Transport ship USS Rockingham and was transported to Pearl Harbour
    USS Rockingham

    Note: Right after transporting Howard for his discharge the USS Rockingham (APA-229) was assigned to Joint Task Force 1, Task Unit 1.3.1 Transportation Group (Transportation Division (TRANSDIV 31) for Operation Crossroads the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in July 1946
