Blencowes in WW2

Blencowe Families    World War One   PRE WW1 SERVICE      American Blencowes     Bicester Blincows      TNG Database

The new family of US airman Lawrence Blinco from Ohio who married Olive Betty Freer is 1944 at Birmingham England
World War Two

There is so much written about this war that it would be redundant to relay even the general outline of the war. With respect to the Blencowe families, however, it should be pointed out that they all served the Allied forces and while two more countries (India and South Africa) are represented in the study than in World War One they still are with the exception of the USA, Commonwealth Countries.

The records for veterans of this war are not easy to obtain so many entries are lacking in much specific about the Blencowe’s war experience, over time this will change. In the years I have been researching this war many Blencowe details Photos etc have come to light through various sources.

INDEX OF NAMES

VETERANS PHOTOGRAPHS

While hundreds of photographs exist on individual pages a Gallery is provided to view all together.

Veterans of both Wars

Continuing a theme that appeared in the WW1 study, the families that served have generally more than one member of the family branch of the tree represented. Continuing into WW2 the family members who served in WW1 are much more likely to have descendants who served in WW2. Several WW1 veterans signed up for duty in WW2;

  • John Henry Blencowe remarkably was wounded twice in WW1 and then taken POW, spent time in harsh conditions at Stendal, Germany and then after the war in 1919 embarked on a lifetime career with the RAF serving through WW2 as a Warrant Officer and eventually as a Squadron Leader.
  • Charles Bernard Blencowe a colonial Sea Commodore at age 62 served in POW Camp administration in Great Britain.
  • Francis Porter Blencowe a Pilot who was discharged with PTSD rejoins in 1942 at age 47 to do an administrative role with the RAFVR.
  • Frederick William Blencowe at age 48 took a Commission with the Indian Army.
  • Richard Allan Blencowe in South Australia at 49 join up to serve as a Corporal in Army Admin.
  • Michael Blencowe age 44 served in the Civil Defence Home Guard.
  • Thomas Blencowe age 41 served with the RAMC.
  • Thomas William Blencowe age 49 served with the Australian Army.
  • Albion Abraham Blinks  age 43 a Landscape Architect was recruited by US Navy as a Chief Petty Officer for a Construction Battalion in the Pacific
  • John (Jack) Blencowe  served continuously from WW1 to WW2 with the Royal Navy

    Notes
    1. It should be noted that this study restricts the time of service for WW2 based on the individual countries involvement ie USA 8 Dec 1941- 31 December 1946*. G.B  and Commonwealth 1 September 1939 – 2 September 1945. The war for the USA did end with the Surrender of Japan on 2 September 1945 but the U.S. Government recognised service until the end of 1946 for medal awards etc. This accounts for American personnel enlisted in 1946 for example being awarded the WW2 Victory medal if they were overseas in occupation zones.
    2. Medal awards and honours vary much more in WW2, unlike WW1 the items are not recorded anywhere near as accurately. The United States deviated from the other Countries in the study with more awards given out. I have tried to give the possible awards the Blencowes received but as with other information welcome any additions or corrections to the profiles.

Disclaimer: Service records are not generally available for most men and women while there are records for casualties, POW, and other information such as service start/end dates for some countries exist. Australia is an exception to this rule and over the next year or so service records for all Australian Blencowe men and women will be digitised.  For other countries, at the moment some guesswork is involved in trying to piece together the war experience of the Blencowe’s. When Regiments /Units are given on headstones and obituaries etc then some further assumptions have been made. Over time, I’m hoping more information may become available and if that eventuates then I shall attempt to get more accuracy in the profiles.

This is looking good , Roger. I hope readers will get behind you and send you any information on our WW2 service men and women. The finished project will be a huge documentation of the Blencowe family including many varied spellings of our name.
