Synopsis
We don’t know at this stage what Infantry Regiment Arthur was with when he earned his Bronze Star near the Roer River in Germany. But given the role and location, he was certainly part of the US Ninth Army as it attacked the Rhineland from November 1944 until March 1945. The Ninth Army was made up of several Army Corps and Corps Infantry Divisions each made up of several units and in total approx 24,000 men. I’m guessing that Arthur joined the 84th Division as did cousin Lawrence Blinco maybe because he was living in Ohio he was in the 84th’s catchment for draftees. The page then supposes he was with the 84th through to the end of the war. As such this story could change considerably if, at a later date, his actual army infantry regiment is known to be otherwise.

- 26 October. Registered for the draft.
1941
- We don’t have a US Army record for Arthurs’s enlistment which is unusual, there is one for Dec 1945 but clearly, the single piece of evidence for his service is the newspaper cutting below which does two things to establish his whereabouts in late 1944 and that he was in the combat field of the Rhineland attack of the US Ninth Army
1942-43
- Likely in training and preparation for the l1944 entry of the Ninth Army into the war
1944
Movements in 1944 assuming Arthur is part of the 84th Infantry division
- 20 September. The 84th Div. (Railsplitters) embarked for Europe arriving in England on 1st October for further training.
- The 84th Division was moved about quite a bit before it was assigned to XIX Corps, Ninth Army, and 12th Army Group. for its moved to Normandy.
- 1-4 November. The 84th division landed on Omaha Beach and moved to the vicinity of Gulpen, the Netherlands by 5–12 November.
- Assignments for the rest of 1944 were
- 8 November 1944: XIII Corps.
- 11 November 1944: Ninth Army, 12th Army Group, but attached for operations to the British XXX Corps, British Second Army, British 21st Army Group.
- 23 November 1944: XIII Corps, Ninth Army, 12th Army Group.
1945
- 23 February. Operation Grenade was the crossing of the Roer River between Roermond and Düren by the U.S. Ninth Army. A successful operation that resulted in the capture of 30,000 German POWs
- The single piece of Arthurs combat service is this Newspaper article that appears to come from the local Martins ferry Newspaper The Times Leader
84th Infantry in Krefeld a town captured on the River Roer.
- At the end of the war, Arthur is returned home but shortly afterwards he decides to re-enlist.
- 24 December. Arthur re-enlists and it’s probable at this time he is assigned to the USAAF as he appears there over the next few years promoted to Master Sergeant
