Major AF Blincow MBE -67 Years with the Army-
Can you beat that? Last weekend the Queens Own Highlanders Association celebrated at Cameron Barracks in Inverness their 50th anniversary since the formation of the regiment in 1961 when the Seaforth Highlanders and the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders amalgamated. Over 1200 Veterans and their families enjoyed the Gathering meeting old comrades, sharing former experiences and celebrating the story of the Highland soldier over the past half century. Sadly, amidst all of this celebration of a proud history and high standards was the recognition that earlier this month The Highlanders lost their first soldier, Corporal Michael Pikeon operations in Afghanistan.One of the many highlights of the weekend was the presentation made to Major Frank Blincow MBE to recognise his 67 years service. He joined the Seaforths in 1944 and included in his service were two years as a Sergeant attached to the Royal Signals in the Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria in the days before the present Queen came to the throne and Britain still had an Empire. Subsequently, he was Regimental Sergeant Major of the Liverpool Scottish and when commissioned as an officer he went on to be the Quartermaster of the 51st Highland Volunteers during which time he was made an Member of the British Empire. The Chairman of the Association, Brigadier Nick Ridley, said of Frank Blincow, “His is an enviable track record and I can safely say that there is no one who comes close to having served the Regiment so loyally or for so long as Frank. After 34 years service in the Regular Army, he went on to give us a further 33 years service in Cameron Barracks, initially as the Assistant Regimental Secretary and subsequently as Treasurer to our Association. Consequently he has served this regiment for nearly 70 years. And what a Treasurer he has been for our Association. No one could have worked harder or run better accounts. In his last auditor’s report the auditor said of Frank Blincow that his records were so immaculate and his system so easy to follow that he ought to be an honorary Chartered Accountant. So on behalf of everyone here I thank you Frank for all you have done for us over the last 33 years and as a token of our appreciation I have the greatest pleasure in presenting you with this regimental painting. I know it is only a small gift but I hope it will bring back happy memories. And as the longest serving member of the regiment I would be honoured if you would now take the salute as the Association Pipes and Drums march off parade”. Peter Grant Peterkin
