• 18 October. Drafted age 21 years living with Mother NOK at Napavine, Washington

1943

• 12 May. Enlisted with the US Navy
• 26 September. Pleasanton California. Received from Naval Distribution centre Pleasanton, California. Taken aboard USS Pensylvannia . The Battleship had just arrived having ferried passengers from Pearl Harbour and so his first sailing was back to Pearl Harbour arriving 6 October.
• 30 September. Aleutian Islands. Muster record F3c

USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) was the lead ship of the Pennsylvania class of super-dreadnought battleships built for the United States Navy in the 1910sPennsylvania bombarded Japanese positions at Holtz Bay and Chicago Harbor at Attu, Alaska.

•  Following bombardment exercises, USS Pennsylvannia became the flagship of Fifth Amphibious Force’s
• 10 November. Gilbert Islands (Kirabati). USS Pennsylvannia departed Pearl Harbor for the Gilbert Islands.
• 20 November. Makin Atoll. Pennsylvania served as flagship in Task Group 52.2 and opened fire on Butaritari Island beginning 20 November in support of the invasion (Operation Galvanic).
• 31 December. Melburn on roster roll of USS Pennsylvannia at sea in vicinity of Kwajalein Island.

  

1944

• 31 January-3 February  Kwajalein Island. Marshall Islands campaign, bombarding Kwajalein Island .
• USS Pennsylvannia retired to Majuro Atoll, also of the Marshall Islands, after the Kwajalein action.

  

• 17 -22 February, Engebi Island.USS Pennsylvannia sailed close to shore and opened fire on Engebi Island, destroying Japanese defensive structures before the American forces landed on Eniwetok on the next day. Until 22 Feb, she bombarded Engebi and Parry Islands to provide naval gunfire support for the ground forces.
• 1 March. Majuro Atoll. USS Pennsylvannia retired to Majuro once again on 1 Mar, then went on to Efate in the New Hebrides then Sydney in Australia for rest, replenishment, and training.
• 24 April. Majuro Atoll.  Muster record
• 10 June. Mariana Islands. USS Pennsylvania sailed with the force tasked with the invasion of the Mariana Islands. On the first night, the destroyer screen reported a sound contact; in the confusion of darkness, Pennsylvania and destroyer Talbot collided, requiring Talbot to return for repairs.

  

• 14-16 June. Saipan, Marianan Islands. USS Pennsylvania bombarded Saipan, Mariana Islands, followed by the bombardment of Tinian on the next day and Guam on 16 June.
• 17- 25 June, USS Pennsylvania covered the ground actions on Saipan,
• 12 -14 July and 17 July- 3 August Guam.
• 12-15 September.Palau Islands. USS Pennsylvania bombarded Peleliu and Angaur of the Palau Islands.

  

• 1-12 October. Admiralty Islands.. she received emergency repairs at the floating drydocks at Manus, Admiralty Islands. Upon departure from Manus, she joined Rear Admiral Jesse Oldendorf’s group, which sailed for the Philippine Islands.
• Between 18-22 October. Leyte Gulf, Philippines. USS Pennsylvania supported the landing and ground actions at Leyte, Philippine Islands.

  

• 25 October. Leyte Gulf, Philippines. In the night of 25 Oct, USS Pennsylvania engaged in the Battle of Surigao Strait, in which the American battle line crossed the “T” of the Japanese fleet, sinking two battleships and three destroyers by the end of the engagement. She remained in the Leyte Gulf region until 25 November, fighting off regular Japanese air attacks in the mean time.
• 31 December. Leyte Gulf, Philippines. Anchored in the Gulf muster record, Fireman 1st class, Engine room

1945

• January. Lingayen Gulf, Luzon. USS Pennsylvania returned to the Philippine Islands in Jan 1945, supporting the Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, Philippine Islands landing operation between 6 and 7 Jan, remaining in the area to provide naval gunfire support until 10 Jan.
• 10 – 17 January. South China Sea. Patrolled in the South China Sea, then returned to the Lingayen Gulf area until 10 Feb.
• 18 July. Pearl Harbour. She returned to the United States for overhaul and the installation of improved radar and fire control equipment. Arriving at Pearl Harbor on 18 Jul following trial cruises and training, Pennsylvania departed for Okinawa, Japan
• 1 August. Wake Island. Bombarded Wake Island on 1 Aug.
• 12 August. Buckner Bay,Okinawa. Torpedoed. a Japanese torpedo bomber struck her, flooding many compartments and causing her to settle at the stern.

  

• 18 August. Departed to Guam. she was towed out of Buckner Bay for Apra Harbor, Guam for repairs
• 6 September. Guam.  A large steel sheet welded to cover the torpedo hole so that she could return to the United States on her own power. She departed Guam on 4 Oct,
• 24 October. Puget Sound. Arrived at the Puget Sound Navy Yard under the escort of destroyer Walke and light cruiser Atlanta on 24 Oct. Shaft problems en route caused her to enter Puget Sound with only one screw turning, but she completed the journey nevertheless. Okinawa was to be her final campaign in the war.
• August-October. San Francisco. Its very likely that Melburn was discharged well before 4 November when he married Helen Blincoe

After the War

After marrying Lorraine Blinco in San Francisco it seems Melburn  rejoined the Navy and this may have been the beginning of the end of the relationship. By 1954 Lorraine under her maiden name is living alone and Melburn has remarried in 1952
