    The U.S. Navy heavy cruiser USS Quincy (CA-71) underway in the Pacific Ocean during 1952-54

    The heavy cruiser USS Quincey  sailed for Mers-el Kebir, North Africa, on 4 July, arriving there 10 July. She proceeded to Palermo, Sicily, 16 July, arriving two days later. Quincy, based at Palermo through 26 July, conducted shore bombardment practice at Camarota in the Gulf of Policastro. She then steamed to Malta via the Straits of Messina. Between 27 July and 13 August, the cruiser participated in training exercises at Malta and Camarota, Italy.

    On the afternoon of 13 August, in company with four British cruisers, one French cruiser, and four American destroyers, Quincy departed Malta for the landings on the southern coast of France, arriving Baie de Cavalaire 15 August. For three days the group provided fire support on the left flank of the U.S. 7th Army. Quincy transferred 19 August to TG 86.4, and until the 24th, engaged the heavy batteries at Toulon, St. Mandrier, and Cape Sicie. She steamed westward the afternoon of 24 August to support minesweepers clearing the channel to Port de Bouc in the Marseilles area.

Obituary

Richard A. Blencowe of Campbell, NY, age 88, died peacefully Wed morning Apr 21, 2010, at his home. He was born on Oct 12, 1921, the son to Bertrum and Clara Blencowe in Mulholland, Town of Erwin, NY.

Richard loved the outdoors! He took great pride in his gardening skills and hunting and fishing was a great pastime. Camping excursions with his wife, children, and grandchildren was the highlight of his summer activities, always looking forward to the campfire stories that were shared by all. Richard also enjoyed riding his 4 wheeler around his 100+ acre homestead. In the summer you could see Richard leisurely mowing his 2-acre manicured lawn.

Richard served with the US Navy in World War II. He served on the USS Quincy in the invasion of Southern France. He worked for the Railroad as a heavy machine operator.

He married Beatrice M. Payne on Feb 12, 1944, at the Wesleyan Church in Riverside. They shared 66 Years together as a happy couple.” They moved to the Campbell area in 1953.

Richard is survived by his wife, Beatrice; one son, Michael (Sharon) Blencowe; one daughter, Susan (James) Harnas; grandchildren: Jonathon (Missy) Blencowe, Joel (Heather) Blencowe, Jason (Katrina) Blencowe, Bryon (Hannah) Harnas, Matthew (Sarah) Harnas; great grandchildren: Dillion, Carissa, Drew, Katelyn, Connor, Ian, Carter, and Alyssa. Richard has one surviving sister, Mary Shafer; brother-in-law Fred Davis; and sister-in-law, June Blencowe.

Richard is predeceased by two brothers, Arthur and Darrell Blencowe, and two sisters, Betty Davis and Alma DuVall.

Calling hours for Richard will be held Sat, Apr 24, 2010, from 6-8 PM and Sun April 25, 2010, from 1-2 PM with the funeral immediately following at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning with Rev. Tom Bell officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Chapel Knoll Cemetery.
