Blincow Dean R. Lieutenant Colonel, USAF 59th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron

Synopsis

Dean a graduate of Teachers college in Nebraska and an FBI agent-in-training when he was drafted was to have a career involving nearly every part of the globe before he retired in 1976 from the US Air Force. His time in the war alone saw him posted to Tunisia, Italy, India China and Germany. A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars Dean was to serve his country for a long time through many wars. From a 1st Lieutenant in WW2, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel by the time he retired.

1942

9 March. Drafted age 21 Occupation FBI agent.
While we do not have Deans records we can surmise that he undertook basic training in the US Army Air Corps training facilities in the USA possibly he was at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, and or Keesler Field, Mississippi, and Sheppard Field, Texas. Basic training consisted of It consisted of:
Basic military general orders, military conduct, close order and open order drill.
Familiarization with all standard weapons, assembly, cleaning and utilization.
Physical training with an obstacle course.
Gas mask training and procedures.
Rifle range qualification on the 30 cal carbine rifle
One week of field training

1943

Likely by earlier 1943 Dean joined the 59th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron which by then was operating with the Twelfth Air Force in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations until February 1944, providing close air support for ground forces, and bombing and strafing personnel concentrations, port installations, fuel dumps, bridges, highways, and rail lines. Took part in the reduction of Pantelleria and flew patrol missions while Allied troops landed after the surrender of the enemy’s garrison. It also participated in the invasion and conquest of Sicily by supporting landings at Salerno, southern Italy, and the beachhead at Anzio.

The 59th Squadron flew the Republi P 47 fighter plane for most of the war
18 June. The 59th moved to Sicily 1943; Licata, Sicily, 16 Jul 1943; Paestum, Italy, 13 Sep 1943; Santa Maria, Italy, 18 Nov 1943 (operated from Paestum, Italy, 1-31 Dec 1943); Cercola, Italy.

1944

January. After Italian operations, the 59th Squadron had a short visit to Karachi, then in India before moving onto Fungwanshan, in China, and back to Moran, India in March. They spent time in September in Nagaghuli, India, November at Piardoba, India.

1945

When at Dudhkundi, India, May 1945 they were to return to the USA and spent the balance of the war at Camp Shanks, NY. However, in November 50th SAquadron became part of the German Occupation forces.

1946-47

The 59th Squadron stayed in Germany during these two years being based at Neubiberg, Germany, from 20 Aug 1946. Dean may have been by this time with other USAAF units as in June he married Pauline Hester.

After The War

Dean was to spend 1946-1976 with the USAF. At that time he attended Washburn University in 1956 progressed his USAF career and his headstone states he was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. Retired in1976 Lt. Colonel USAF.
