Pioneer Corps

Ivan Arthur Blencowe, Staff Sergeant, 940586, Pioneer Corps

Synopsis

We do not have record of when Ivan joined the Army but a rank of Staff Sergeant at age 26 on discharge suggest maybe even he joined prior to 1939 in 1938 at age 18 is possible. 1939 Register may confirm. The only record we have so far is the WW2 medals award which indicates service in N Africa in late 1942-early 1943. He wasnt sent to Italy like a lot of soldiers after the N African campaign

1943- 1945
  • Originally formed as the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps in 1939
  • Renamed Pioneer Corps in 1940; granted the Royal prefix in 1946
  • Comprised hundreds of companies in N Africa, often grouped under administrative units
